Stream & River Crossings with Poles
Before you step

Cross where it’s wider and slower.

Unbuckle hip and sternum straps.

Lengthen poles 1–2 in (2–5 cm).
Technique
- Plant both poles upstream, step one foot, then move one pole—repeat.
- On slick rock, use bare carbide tips (not rubber).
When to turn back
Rising, silty water; floating debris; or depth beyond knee—choose another plan.
