How to Replace Carbide Tips on Trekking Poles (Without Wrecking the Shaft)
Carbide tips last a long time, but granite and miles win eventually. Here’s a simple, shop-style swap you can do at home.

When is it time?
- Tip looks rounded or chipped; slips on rock.
- The housing wiggles or squeaks.
- Baskets don’t seat squarely.
Tools & parts
- New carbide tip units (2-pack).
- Heat source (hot water or heat gun on low).
- Pliers with a cloth, and eye protection.
- Optional: wood block and mallet for pressing.
Removal
- Warm the plastic housing (not the carbon shaft) 20–40 sec to soften old glue.
- Grip the housing with cloth-wrapped pliers, pull straight off. Avoid twisting the carbon section.
Install the new tip
- Dry-fit to confirm direction; apply a thin film of hot-melt or epoxy if required by your tip model.
- Press on fully—hand force + a gentle tap against a wood block seats it.
- Let adhesive set; check alignment.
Break-in & baskets
- Thread your mud/sand or snow baskets back on. (No need to remove tips to change baskets.)
- Test on a slab or driveway.

FAQs
- Do I need glue? Many tip units are friction-fit; a thin film of hot-melt improves security.
- Will heat hurt carbon? Heat the plastic tip only; avoid the carbon tube.
- Can I reuse old tips? Not recommended once rounded or loose.
