Carabiner Certifications, Decoded: UIAA, CE, EN12275, EN362 & EN365
What's the really means of these certifications?
-
UIAA — Independent mountaineering safety label.
-
EN12275 — Mountaineering connectors (climbing/rescue contexts).
-
EN362 — Personal fall-protection connectors (industrial/work-at-height).
-
EN365 — General PPE requirements: marking, instructions, documentation.
-
CE — The EU conformity marking applied to PPE after notified-body evaluation and quality control under Regulation (EU) 2016/425.
Notice: UIAA/EN specify how a connector must perform. CE is the legal conformity mark in Europe that says “this model passed the required assessment and ongoing QA.”
What's the different for CE and UIAA?
CE is required for sale in the EU/EEA. In North America, you’ll often see UIAA for climbing gears.
Choosing the right tool
-
Climbing / rescue: Favor UIAA + EN12275. Auto-lockers reduce user error at anchors and belays.
-
Work at height (NA job sites): Check your safety plan. Many require ANSI Z359.12; EN362 + CE might not be sufficient by itself.
-
General utility (non-PPE): Certifications aren’t required—but be crystal clear it’s not for human suspension.
